Gladiolus Black Sea is a popular garden perennial known for its beautiful dark red flowers that bloom on long, slender stems. They are ideal for cut flowers and add colour and height to floral arrangements. Growing gladiolus is not too difficult, but they do require some care to keep the plants strong and blooming each year. Here are some tips on how to grow marigolds:

How to grow gladiolus?

  • Choosing a location: Gladiolus prefer a sunny location that is protected from strong winds. Full sun is crucial for abundant flowering.
  • Soil: Plants thrive in well-drained, fertile soil. It is advisable to enrich the soil with compost or well-decomposed manure before planting.
  • Planting: Gladiolus bulbs should be planted in mid-May, after the last frost. Plant the larger bulbs about 10-15 cm deep and the smaller ones 5-8 cm deep, spaced approximately 10-15 cm apart. For long term flowering you can plant bulbs every two weeks until early summer.
  • Watering: Water the bulbs regularly after planting to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Increase the amount of water after the bulbs have emerged.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise the sword onions every 1-2 weeks during the growing season with a complete fertiliser solution.
  • Support: As swordflowers can reach considerable height, it may be necessary to support the plants to prevent them from breaking, especially in gusty winds.
  • Protection against pests and diseases: gladiolus are not susceptible to pests and diseases, but they are very tasty to slugs. Check the plants regularly for pests or diseases. If a problem is detected, use appropriate pesticides or fungicides as needed.
  • After flowering: after flowering, leave the leaves on the plant until they dry. This will ensure that the bulbs will have enough energy for the next year. After the leaves have dried, dig up the bulbs, clean them and store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring.

By growing gladiolus according to these instructions, you can expect abundant and colorful blooms every summer.
